Who We Are

The King’s Union was established in November 2025 as a chamber for public debate within King’s College London.

The Union regularly entertains motions on the most salient issues of the day, ranging from intervention in Venezuela to the abolition of the monarchy.

Debates traditionally feature three speakers each on the proposition and opposition, ranging from students to notable visiting speakers. Audience members get a chance to pose points of information, and ask questions to each side before a final vote.

The Union was founded on the principles of freedom of speech and expression, as well as mutual respect in debate. The Society upholds the highest standard of civility, which is necessary to facilitate the free and constructive exchange of ideas.

On top of this, the Union serves as a focal point for student social life, hosting movie screenings, pub crawls, and more.

Past Debates (2025-26)

  • 26th November: "This House would rejoin the European Union."

    The motion was defeated, 16-16.

  • 9th December: "This House believes that Britain needs more immigration."

    The motion was carried, with 30 ayes to 9 noes.

  • 20th January: "This House supports the ongoing American intervention in Venezuela."

    The motion was defeated, with 43 noes to 30 ayes.

  • 27th January: "This House believes that the West should institute regime change in Iran."

    The motion was defeated.

  • 3rd February: "This House prefers socialism over capitalism."

    The motion was carried.

  • 10th February: "This House believes that the British Empire was a national disgrace."

    The motion was carried, with 61 ayes to 31 noes.

  • 18th February: "This House believes that abortion should be a human right."

    The motion was carried, with 75 ayes to 20 noes.

  • 3rd March: "This House would abolish the Monarchy."

    The motion was carried, with 45 ayes to 30 noes.

  • 10th March: "This House believes in God."

    The motion was carried, with 53 ayes to 51 noes.

  • 17th March: "This House believes that billionaires should not exist."

    The motion was defeated, with 43 noes to 38 ayes.

  • 19th March: "Left vs Right: KCLCA vs KCL Your Party"

    The KCL Conservative Association won the debate on swing, increasing their support from 47% to 59% between the beginning and end of the debate.
